The cool morning air seemed to go right through Evelyn Hauser's body. She hadn't been able to sleep for the past few days, which always seemed to happen around this time of year, since it was around the time of when her father was killed. She stuck her hands in the front pockets of her jeans. She had her messanger bag flung over her shoulder, and there didn't seem to be a soul around. She was used to it, though. It was six in the morning. She could hear a few cars off in the distance and the street lights still cast a slight glow on the side walk. She looked to her left. She looked to her right. It was just her luck. Nothing she could find was open.
Evelyn kept walking, not about to give up and head back home. She could see lights on ahead. She hurried her step a bit, anxious to get inside and have a hot cup of coffee, that is, if the place was open. To her delight, it was. A huge neon sign on the front of the metal building read THE DINER, and underneath that, it said OPEN 24 HOURS. Evelyn managed to smile as she made her way to the huge, red door. She walked into the diner, noticing that she wasn't the only one with the idea of an early breakfast. She loved the decorations of the place, it seemed to transport her back to a simpler, more innocent time.
Evelyn waited to be seated, like the sign said. Then, from the back door, an older woman came out and walked over to her. "Hello sweetie," she said. Her hair was silver and her face was wrinkled. She also had a pair of glasses hung around her neck. "How many?" she asked. "Just one," she told the woman. The woman led her to a booth to the right of the entrance. Evelyn sat down, facing away from the door. "Can I get you anything this mornin'?" the woman asked. "Just a coffee, black, please," Evelyn answered. "Alright, coming right up." The woman trudged away and Evelyn rubbed her eyes. Only a few moments later, the woman was back with her coffee. "Thanks," Evelyn told her. The woman nodded and walked away.
Evelyn took a sip of her coffee and grabbed listened to the 50's music that came from an authentic jukebox over by the entrance. She was happy that she found this place, it was nice and quiet, plus they made some pretty good coffee. Evelyn opened her messanger bag and grabbed a book from inside it. She flipped through the pages, seemingly putting off reading. After staring at the cover for a few seconds, she decided she didn't want to read. She shoved the book back into her bag and wrapped her hands around the coffee mug. It was nice and warm. Evelyn let out a sigh right before she took another drink. After sitting the cup back on the table, she turned her gaze to the window and watched as the sun rose, creating a beautiful sky filled with shades of pink and orange. It was absolutely stunning to her.
