The day was new, and the streets empty. To Twigg it was a sign that there was little point opening the store this early, but as she pushed up the shutters, as she did each morning, cringing at the sound of metal scraping on metal, she knew that there was no point pointing this out to anyone. After all she was the manager, the owner didn't care about this place, he saw it as another business venture that brought in a steady trickle of money, mostly thanks to Twigg who had poured her heart and soul into this place.
Hand placed on her hips she let out a sigh before inhaling the refreshing air of Spring down in Cape Cod. There was no where else she'd rather be if she was totally honest, even if the sun shone down too brightly in here eyes, making hers quint, and the sea air was perhaps a little salty this morning, tinged with the smell of the fishermen and their catch as they packed it up and made their way back to bed, just as people like Twigg were starting there day.
A smile curled her lips and more out of habbit than meaning she shook her head slightly before turning on the heels of her pumps and heading back inside the small store. Inside the walls were plastered with posters of the young woman's favourite bands, the rest of the room taken up by shelves, stacks and bins full of music in every format imaginable. Settling herself on a high stool at the checkout near the back of the store she gave another smile at her second home. It was hardly the ritz, but she liked to think of it as her own. Glancing at the clock she saw it was almost half past eight. No doubt Tyler was awake now, pestering her cousin to let him watch cartoons in all his 1 year old glory. Jamie had said she'd drop by today to pick him up and take him to the park if she had time, but Twigg knew her best friend had a busy schedule lately and wouldn't hold it against her if she rescheduled.

Hiking Tyler on her hip Jamie, or Kennie as Twigg preferred, blew out some air. The one year old hadn't been too easy to get dressed when she'd picked him up that morning. Since her schedule had been free she'd decided to get Tyler and take him to see his mommy earlier than planned. The little boy was, after all, his mother's pride and joy. Smirking at the boy who gripped her jacket Kennie laughed. "What can I say little man, if I let you down you run faster than the wind." Tyler stuck out his bottom lip and attempted to cross his tubby arms, he failed.
Seeing the shop Kennie reached up and swiped some hair from her face. The breeze wasn't cold as the sun came up, making it clear the day would be good. The salty air bit into her skin that had grown accustomed to it in all the years she'd been there. The ding of the bell made Tyler jump as she opened the door.
"Twigg!" She yelled into the store, setting Tyler on the ground, keeping hold of his hand as he immediatly tried to get away. "I brought a visitor." She laughed, waiting for her friend to show up. Tyler was usually with one of the of them anyway. Reaching into her purse she pulled out the sack of donuts she and Tyler had picked out on the way over. "Get your ass out here, food!" She yelled, still smirking as the one year old tugged at her firm hand.

Picking up a stack of paper work she pursed her lips and held back a sigh, one of the bad things about being a manager, the paperwork. Who'd have thought you needed this much just to sell music? Running a hand through her bleach blonde hair she shook her head and got up off the stool, eyes flicking across the stacks as if looking for something out of the ordinary. No one ever came in this early so she didn't have to worry about the shop front as she ducked into the back to file the sheets of paper that fluttered loosely in her hand. Slipping through the backdoor she pulled open the large silver filing cabinet that was unbelievably battered, it had been this way when she got here, god knows what they did to hit.
Shutting it with a slam she gave another little smile, she'd make Brad to the boring stuff when, and if he turned up today. The sound of the bell from the front raised one of her eyebrows, no one needed CD's this early in the morning surely? Unless it was another student who'd forgot about an assignment and was rushing in before classes started. Before she even had time to turn she heard a familiar voice shout her from round the front.
Laughing lightly she stepped into the store once again, the familiar sight of Kennie and Tyler, both munching on what looked like donuts reached her green eyes. "That kids gonna grow up with a sugar addiction," her eyes twinkled as she stepped forward and bent to scoop up the chubby little angel that was her son. Listening to him gurgle she laughed again, "Come on I know you can do better than that," when he finally managed a 'Mumm' and reached up with arms to grip her long hair she bent her head and gave him a big wet kiss on his cheek, enjoying the way he writhed and giggled. It was a strange feeling being a Mother, Twigg never could have imagined how much she could love another person, the little guy made everything worth while.
"Hey Aunt Kennie," she winked at her best friend. "No cars to be fixed this morning?"

Watching Twiggy and Tyler was always something Kennie enjoyed. She knew her friend hadn't been ready when she was pregnant, but you'd be hard up trying to find someone who loved their son as much as Twiggy loved hers. It was all in the way they moved and the way she lit up just at the sight of Tyler. "Well...figured I'd get him started on something that's not one hundred percent bad for him first." She laughed, popping a donut hole in her mouth a munching with satisfaction.
As Tyler plopped back onto the floor of the store Kennie rolled her eyes at being called Aunt. She'd been as much a part of Tyler's life as Twigg if someone thought about it. Their friendship had been immediate and lasted still. "I've got someone picking up their clutchplate...they think they can fix it better than a girl." Kennie rolled her eyes, anyone that was actually from White Hill knew better than that. Kennie knew more than most when it came to cars.
Reaching over she pressed play on the 'cd sampling cd player.' "Counting Crows Twigg?" She asked, raising a brow at her friend. A smirk crossed her face. She was always teasing her for whatever was in there at the time. "When do you get off today?" She asked her, intending on seeing if they were taking Tyler to the pit with them that night or not.
Tyler stood up and began shaking himself around to the music, not quite matching the beat but having his own one year old fun all the same. Kennie had to laugh at the sight. "Is it cool if he comes with me to the shop today?" She asked, knowing full well that since it was Monday Brad wouldn't want Tyler hanging out with his mom.

Reaching out with Tyler still gripped tightly in her arms she plucked a Donut deftly from the bag in her best friends hand, sticking her tongue out briefly before she popped the sweet snack into her mouth and munching loudly to amuse the little boy in her arms. "Mmmm Tyler you can bring her again," with a wink she dropped an equally big wet kiss on the girls face before twirling and taking her seat at the desk, listening happily to the boy gurgle and giggle still in her arms. Kennie had definitely found the best way to make Twigg's day go better, one of the things she hated most about this job was having to sneak away in the morning without being able to see her son awake and in all his glory. All she needed was one of his smiled that seemed to brighten up her world or one of his childishly innocent laughs and she could deal with anything. Another reason why she hated him going to stay at his Father's.
"So what have you two got planned today? More sugar I hope," another grin crossed her lips as she met the other girls eyes. Kennie was the second best thing in Twigg's life, after Tyler of course, she was under no illusion that she wouldn't be able to cope with the girls influence and presence in her life, she wasn't just her best friend, she was her sister, and everyone knew it. Even after the unfortunate occurance with Twigg and Kennie's brother they were as strong as ever. Listening to the familiar car jargon she smiled, "Ahhh well they'll soon see I guess when they find themselves spinning out of control on some freeway somewhere and thinking, damn I wish I'd let that girl take care of my car."
Dropping another wink she watched as the brunette flicked through the racks, grinning at the selection "Hey we all love abit of the Crows," she joked, her chin resting lightly on the head of the baby perched on her knee. At the question she thought for the moment. "About four thirty I think, we've got a delivery at four so as soon as that's done, I'm out of here."

Laughing at the idea of giving the already hyperactive one year old some more sugar Kennie raised a brow at her friend. It was a wonder they were able to even be separated to go to their separate jobs and classes. Their lives were so intertwined, they were sisters and anything you could think of. There was no way one or the other could do without their opposite. Watching Tyler bounce with his mom Kennie simply shook her head, she didn't need to have her own. Tyler was almost half hers. The thought spooked Kennie and she laughed once more. "If you think that little sucker is getting anymore sugar before noon...you're out of your tree." Kennie smirked, pussing the forward button on the player for the next song.
"Yes, I'm sure they'll be falling off the cliff as their clutchplate flies through their window screaming....why was I such a fool?" Through the whole sentence Kennie had done a rather awful montage of what the people would look like before they got smacked in the face with their expensive part. Listening to Twigg's response to her Crows Crack Kennie moved towards the two most important people in her life, next to her brother that is.
"Are we taking Tyler tonight or are we hiring THE BABYSITTER." Her mouth widened with her eyes in mock horror at the idea of it, laughing when she couldn't hold the expression any longer. It was a rare occasion when the two of them left Tyler with anyone else. It was strange to think they were ever without him in general. Looking at Tyler's sticky mouth and sugar covered fingers Kennie laughed. "He's going to be ... the ... hmmm he can hand me the rags." Kennie stated, realizing that the one year old was learning more and more about cars as the day passed.

As Kennie spoke, the grin on Tylers face disappeared, as if he understood the fact that he wasn't getting any more sugar until, well until his Mum or 'Aunt' saw fit. In his little mind he knew that could mean never, adults always did have the knack for forgetting important things like sugar and bringing him his favourite toy. Seeing the forlorn expression on his face made Twigg's heart skip a beat, with his overlarge glistening eyes he was hard to resist, but hell, she already as lenient as you got, if she wasn't careful he'd be driving around the house on a motor cycle good ol' Aunt Kennie gave him when he was about 7.
Shaking her hearts she pinched his cheeks gently, "Sorry buddy, it's fruit for my little munchkin for the rest of the day," she of course didn't expect the girl to feed him nothing but fruit, but it was fun to tease the little guy. Gripping one of his pudgy little hands as he tried to swipe at her, a perturbed expression on her face she almost laughed, watching the brunette skip through the songs. "Do you mind?" she joked before flipping her hair from her eyes, careful not to get it anywhere near Tyler as he'd probably pull it out of her head, one of his favourite 'lets annoy Mommy games.'
"In that case I have no sympathy for them, should have let my girl take care of them shouldn't they?" Another laugh escaped her as she reviewed her words. "Hey I sound like your pimp," grinning she shook her head, trying not to laugh at the girls little act as she mimicked some poor guy being hideously mutilated. Things like that scared Twigg, she didn't like to think of the dangers that lurked around every corner, when you're a Mom you have to think more about silly little things like that.
At the mention of 'babysitter' Tyler shook in a scared way that Kennie had obviously taught her to impress Twigg whenever it was mentioned. Poking him softly, she watched him wriggle and laugh again. "I think it's the babysitter, I don't know if we're on so I can't risk it, plus I doubt you'd want to be taking care of the little tyke when there's al those free agents around," winking again, she pretended to cover Tyler's ears. "I think it's an early night for our little boy," the our was so natural it didn't even register as weird.

"Yep...sounds like fruit is the food of the day." She teased Tyler relentlessly when he was with his mom. It was mostly one of those things like...mommy save me. It always entertained the three of them for a bit. Reaching into her purse Kennie began rummaging through her belongings. Her purse had recently been dubbed the black hole...because things went in and they never came back out.
Tyler's shocked expression at the word babysitter was something that thrilled Kennie. It'd taken hours to get him to do and now he did it on command, exciting the girls. Laughing she bent over and kissed his forehead, rubbing the back that was smooth with blonde hair. "Let me know, if you can't leave him to the horrors of a babysitter than we'll make it a movie night." Kennie said simply, it wasn't even a question. The two, as said before, were difficult to separate. "As for the man and his clutchplate....guess we'll find out hmm?" A smile once again protruded from Kennie's lips. It was inevitable around Twigg.
The our in Twigg's sentence didn't register as odd or new to Kennie. That was sort of how it had always been. Though she hadn't participated in conceiving him or anything, she'd been at his birth and the before as well...and she was there now. Still rummaging through her purse Kennie's ears perked, smiling at it.
Pulling out a cd in a plastic case she held it up for Twigg to see. "I've got the first song recorded." She said, a wide grin spreading across her face at the thought. It was something she'd been working towards for years and the first one was finally just right to be on a cd. White Hill was definitly helping her out.

When the girl began to rummage in that bag of hers she rolled her eyes and bounced the boy on her knee, "I wonder whats going to come out of Mary Poppins bag today, Ty?" Trying not to laugh she saw the boy scrunch up his eyes, as if he could see through the material as he tried to guess, it wasn't a serious came Twigg played, but Tyler always saw it as one. Finally with a twinkle in his eyes and a look of joy on his face he exclaimed loudly "COOKIES!" This brought a laugh from her finally and shook her head, dropping a kiss onto the silky smooth blonde hair. No doubt the hair would soon darken, Twigg hadn't seen her natural colour in so long she'd almost forgotten what it was, and Tylers Dad was as dark as his Mother was fair, so not doubt it would take over.
"I think he can live with a babysitter for once," the three had spent just about every night that week together, except when Twigg had had rehearsal on the Monday, and though she loved spending time with her son, she feared she would lose all contact with her friends and a normal young life if she immersed herself in Mother hood. "Janey will be fine, she's great with him and though he seems loathe to admit it, he loves her being there," lowering her voice she leaned towards Jennie, "Personally I think she's secretly sneaking him candy for him to keep quiet."
When the rummage was finally complete, Twigg freed one arm from the clutching hands of Tyler and reached out to take the Cd offered to her, "Wow, way to go Kennie," the girl had been working so hard on this that Twigg even found herself bubbling with excitement at the prospect of her being one step closer to fame. After all, Kennie had been unbeliveably helpful through the whole process of Twigg's bands first demo being produced.

The banter between a mother and child is always interesting to watch. But with Twigg and Tyler...you'd never expect someone like Twigg to be such a natural at it. As her friend took her cd Kennie found herself bouncing up and down for a moment, a wide grin plastered on her face. "I finish my second one tomorrow and a manager is coming to listen to them both." She said finally, her eyes twinkling. It'd been killing her to wait this long to tell and it was showing.
"Babysitters rock, charm her once more Mr. T." Kennie ruffled the soft bounty of hair atop Tyler's head once more as she stood near the two. Bubbling over with excitement Kennie waited for Twigg's next comment while Tyler's expression and giggles seemed to match their excitement as well. He was always very empathetic. "Are you playing at the Pit tonight or are we getting smashed?" She teased, knowing that's not why they went there.
Everything with Twigg and Kennie was a laugh. No one understood where their strange nicknames came from nor could they understand how Kennie had so much say over Tyler. She was always around if Tyler or Twigg was. If their mother's had given birth to the two of them no one would've been able to handle it, they barely could now.

Even as she stared at the blank looking Cd in her hand she could see Kennie bouncing up and down from the corner of her eye, she couldn't help but smile, her friend had been waiting so long for this and Twigg shared her excitement. "You best not forget me and Ty when you're all big and famous," it had used to be that it was Twigg's major dream to be the star, Kennie loved the cars, but since Tyler she was finding less and less time to dedicate to her music, playing any instruments and least of all to writing anything, if it wasn't for the guys in the band she'd probably have given up by now.
"I think he'll be quite the little heartbreaker don't you think?" It was something she said alot, mostly to take the piss out of all those Mothers' who went around saying it, but secretly that was how she felt, no doubt like everyone did about their children. They were perfect, right? Tyler bounced on her knees, mimicking Jamie as he sensed the excitement in them both, it was amazing how he seemed to understand everything that was going on when Twigg knew he couldn't possibly. At the question she looked up, eyes twinkling. "If I'm playing then we're getting smashed, if I'm not... then I'm getting smashed," letting out a laugh she look back at Tyler. There was few times she could let her hair down, and she had lost most of her wild ways, except her appearance, but she could still party as hard as any, well she liked to think so.

"Sweet...so we're getting smashed. I'll tell the boys at the shop tonight." Kennie stated firmly, knowing that with a babysitter watching Tyler all night and the two of them with all their guys combined at the pit...they were getting dragged or carried to someone''s house. They didnt' party often and when they did....they were the life of it and there was no doubting that.
Picking Tyler off his mom's lap Kennie reached and kissed Twigg on the cheek. Something they just...always did. It was another trade. "Let's listen to quick, cause i've got to get over there for Mr. CP." She said smirking. Tyler tugged at her hair, which was something that bugged Twigg....but Kennie didnt' seem to mind all that much if she thought about it.
"It's called Gardenia." Kennie said quickly, realizing she hadn't written the title on the front. Kissing Tyler hard the cheek she waited with anticipation. Twigg was her number one ali in honesty and Kennie would only know if it was good when Twigg told her so.

Tyler seemed to puzzle for a moment over what the word 'smashed' meant, and trying his hardest he wrinkled his brow, to try and raise one eyebrow. For some reason the boy was determined to master this trick soon but everytime he did it, it made Twigg or Kennie laugh so much he lost heart. Biting her lip to keep from laughing, Twigg looked down at her son and shook her head slightly, that movement conveying all her feelings for the little boy, all her love summed up in one gaze. It would be nice to let herself go for once, to know that Tyler was safe and not in desperate need of her, and just enjoy herself, but damn would she miss his chubby blonde head.
Allowing Kennie to pluck the child from her lap she leaned back against the wall and tucked her legs up beneath her like a small child perched on the stool. Accepted the kiss from her best friend she fiddled with the CD in her hand, giving it one more glance before he gave an exaggerated sigh, her eyes twinkling, and hopping off her stool, heading for the store's main system that controlled all the speakers around the room. Popping open the top she opened the flimsy plastic case and slid the shiny CD into the gaping mouth that waited eagerly for it's next victim. Pressing the top down quickly she cranked up the volume, her fingers tingling with anticipation as the song started itself and a familiar beat could be heard pumping from the speakers.
When Kennie's voice finally kicked in, Twigg grinned, pride evident on her face as she bobbed her head along to the music, watching Tyler wiggle as the brunette kissed him. Halfway through, over the roar of the music Twigg yelled out her opinion. "It's great Kennie, there's no way that guy can say yes... if he does, well let's hope he meets the same end as the guy that wouldn't let you fix his car."

Listening to her own words, her own music...her own voice filter through the sound system of the Ritz was probably more satisfying than anything else that Kennie could dream up for her music. It wasn't because she was a small town girl, most of it was because the place held such a big place in her heart because of Twigg.
Closing her eyes Kennie let herself sway to the slow rhthym, holding Tyler close to her. He'd been the first one to hear her sing this song..,in the shower. He was, after all, almost more than half of her. Opening her eyes once more Kennie caught sight of the pride eminating from Twigg's expression. They were always on each other's side...through everything. There was nothing that could compete with the way Kennie held Twigg and Tyler in her heart.
Tyler began clapping his hands to a beat that Kennie had taught him only recently while they'd been waiting for Twigg. The words filtered through the sound system ever so slowly. As the song finished Kennie's already big grin widened. "What do you think?" She asked her, laughing at Twigg's comment that basically said there was death involved.
